Ierapetra as a 12 Star City of ELDW 2010 committeed to the Council of Europe’s initiative applies a new e-tool for disseminating the purpose and the activities of ELDW globally.

By using lilvestream web live broadcast everybody will have the chance to attend  our indoor activities from 11 to 17 of October 2010. Stay tuned.

Ierapetra: A 12 Star City for ELDW 2010

Ierapetra has been granted with the title of “12 Star City 2010″. This nomination gives us more strength to organise and this year a remarkable ELDW for our citizens. We are open to cooperation not only in Greece but with other Local Authorities of CoE member states. Good luck to every Authority.

Mini Marathon Race on 3 October 2010

The preparations for the mini Marathon on 3 of October 2010 have laready started. Athletes from Crete and elsewhere will run a 15 Km distance in Ierapetra. Details to be announced soon.

Marathon Race started as a tribute to Pheidippides THE RUNNER of VICTORY in Marathon Battle and continues to have a special position in the heart of all athletes.

Citizen of Ierapetra 2010 Award

Following last year’s nomination of Dr Daskalakis as Citizen of Ierapetra 2009, the Municipality will award one of its citizens for 2010. Municipality is trying to give the message that citizens are part and parcel of local democracy and they must be awarded for their contribution to local issues in general.

Ierapetra has invited and Sustainable Seattle accepted the invitation for an e-conference within October. The re-known Organisation from Seattle has achieved many social, environmental, educational goals in revitalizing Seattle. Collective Action at its best. Thank you Seattle.

Ierapetra as a 12 Star Candidate City

Ierapetra has applied for 2010 12 Star Candidate City and soon it will announce its official programme of ELDW 2010 activities.

We hope that this year – after last year’s official representation of Greece and as one of the 2009 Pilot Cities- Ierapetra will run activities on a par with its democratic tradition and its sustainable vision of the future.

ELDW 2010: Forthcoming Activities

Dear friends of the European Local Democracy Week,

Municipality of Ierapetra organizes for the third consecutive year activities within the frame of Council of Europe ELDW 2010 edition .

This year edition starts real early! In the breathtaking village of Anatoli an open meeting will occur, 1st August 2010.

In the premises of old Primary School of Anatoli, the Vice Mayor of Ierapetra will present the Programme “Beautiful Villages” within the Framework of the co funded Programme of EU and Greek state “Green Development” (National Strategic Reference Framework 2007-2013). The ELDW Coordinator will present in brief the ELDW institution, the role of the CoE, and some activities of the 2010 ELDW programme in Ierapetra in regard to sustainable development (ie: saving water, using renewable energies and biodiversity).

Other planned activities (the official complete programme will be announced soon) contain:

1. Street theater, Bike race, mini marathon, skate race

Through the ELD Week street activities will be held in different places for giving the opportunity to the citizens to enjoy and participate in them, proclaiming the importance of public space.

2. Open Conference and exhibition for renewable energies

Conference and open meetings along with exhbition for informing the public for the materials and renewable energy systems for creating a more sustainable community.

3. Eco-Label “Zero Carbon” Schools and Ecological Footprint Calculations

The scope of these activities is to get the young citizens familiar with the meaning and the substance of CO2 emission and how to reduce them in our everyday life, from school to home, and from business to playgrounds.

Other activities contain conferences, eco-friendly driving, recycling etc.
